Macaron Love

French macarons are my fave indulgence and now that Friday has arrived and I have a 4 day weekend to look forward to with my 3 valentines, an early celebration is in order. Nothing like a sweet and delicate fruity treat to get me into weekend mode, and ready for a busy yet fabulous Valentine’s weekend ahead.

I tell you, of all the macarons I’ve tried, there’s nothing quite better than a Ladureé french macaron, and although I haven’t been in New York or Paris lately, I recently received the Ladureé Macarons recipe book as a gift and instantly fell in love.

Laduree French Macarons | Posh Little DesignsThis book is loaded with beauty, elegance, inspiration and many incredible and unexpected recipes for macaron shells and fillings. Highly recommended. I had such a difficult time deciding which to make first, but with Valentine’s Day on my mind I decided on a batch of the Red Jam Macarons with a classic almond shell. A designer exclusive (yes they have designer exclusives) for Christian Lacroix and suitable for the celebration of love in shades of mauve and pink.

As you will see below, mine are certainly nowhere near the perfection of a Ladureé macaron, but simply the best I’ve ever made at home, with jam filling made from raspberries, strawberries and cherries, which was good enough to eat by the spoonful, no lie! The color of my shells definitely still need work as do my thin “feet” but I know what I did wrong, and cannot wait to make them again.  Now the question is which recipe I’ll try next.

I actually made these macarons earlier in the week and photographed via instagram, but I stored a few in the freezer, which I’m enjoying with a hot glass of tea this morning. My favorite way to kick off the weekend. What’s yours? Perhaps I’ll pair a few more with a glass of champagne tomorrow.

Wishing you all a fabulous Valentine’s Day and weekend. Thanks for reading!

TGIF + Eggnog French Macarons

Celebrating the fact that Friday has arrived with a warm mug of tea and sweet macarons, because well, it’s just been one of those weeks. An extra long one to be honest, so I’m looking forward to the weekend ahead and kicking it off with a few of my favorite little things.

It truly is all the little things that I love to get lost in, even if only for a few moments, until it’s back to business as usual.  Little things like this gold monogram mug from Anthropologie which is perfect for holding my oversized serving of decaf chai (with extra almond milk.) The Little book of Chanel from Zgallerie, and some delightful homemade Eggnog Macarons, which I pulled from my frozen holiday stash!

The recipe for the Eggnog Macarons was found on South each Primal and I’m super thrilled about it! The instructions are simple and straight forward with measurements already converted, for those of us who don’t already own scales (like myself). If you’re still learning the ins and outs of French Macarons (like myself),  I would highly reccommend this recipe! I will admit, the more practice you have with the macarons, the less difficult they become, but I have to credit the recipe for the way they turned out. No cracks, good sized feet and a pretty circular shape too. So major!!

And for the filling…I swapped out the regular butter for vegan butter and eggnog for coconut milk eggnog to make them dairy free. Yes, I know they are eggnog macarons, and holidays are over but this recipe is so worth holding onto, or of course making and stashing away in your freezer as I have.

I’ve actually gotten into a habit stashing away macarons in the freezer since they pretty much happen to make everything better! Wouldn’t you agree?!

What’s your favorite way to celebrate the arrival of the weekend? Are you a football fan? I definitely am and I’m looking forward to watching the hawks beat the panthers Saturday evening! Yes, I gotta rep my city!! And if they win, I’ll plan some type of celebratory treat or beverage on the blog for their next playoff game.

TGIF!

 Thanks for reading friends!

German Chocolate French Macarons

German Chocolate French Macarons | Posh Little Designs

After traveling to NY last month and visiting Ladurée, I’ve become a little more obsessed with french macarons. Not gonna lie, I’ve been thinking about them quite often and regretting not bringing home more from the city. More than anything I think visiting Ladurée has inspired me to become better at making macarons. My mom’s birthday last weekend seemed like the perfect opportunity to try my hand at making them again, this time flavored like german chocolate cake, since that’s her favorite dessert.

I just happened to have all the ingredients on hand in my pantry to make the german chocolate cake macarons, but none left to spare. Of course that meant if I experienced a mess up, it would basically be tragic and more than anything a waste of time, but luckily there were no tragedies in my kitchen last weekend. Instead I was thrilled when I placed the shells in the oven and watched them rise, feet and all. If you’ve ever made french macarons before, the term “feet” is one worth celebrating, and that I did, over a glass of sauvignon blanc.

These German chocolate cake macarons were only my 3rd attempt at making them, and although far from perfect, they were much improved from my last batch. I credit the awesome recipe for the macarons I found via Wives with Knives which I followed exactly, only substituting the butter and evaporated milk in the german chocolate filling to make the macarons dairy free and do note that the shells and filling is also gluten free.

Seriously if you love french macarons and german chocolate cake, I highly, highly recommend this recipe! They are a little intimidating to make at first, but I assure you with practice they become easier and easier. Next time around I’ll just have to grind down my almond meal to a finer consistency and add a few more folds to the batter for a smoother shinier shell, but the flavor was there nonetheless.

Most importantly, my mom was absolutely delighted by her sweet birthday gift, which was a reward in itself.

And for an extra reward, I enjoyed tea and a few leftover macarons on the morning of the first day of Fall as the rain began to fall. The perfect way to bring in the new season.

Thanks as always for reading and Happy Fall! Much more to share soon.

Friday Delights

Yesterday my hubby surprised me with a box of French macarons and my Friday was instantly made!

Of course it would be even better if I was eating some authentic ones from Ladurée, but until I can make it to New York or Paris, the freezer section of Costco will have to suffice!

Ah…I still can’t believe there’s not one bakery in my hometown that makes macarons from scratch, but the Cocola brand from Costco was pretty decent. I tried the rose flavor yesterday and look forward to tasting the others soon! I do prefer the jam filled cookies since I avoid dairy for the most part, but how does the saying go? Everything in moderation right?!

Before I sampled one yesterday I snapped a photo for Instagram. I paired the sweet cookies with fresh hydrangea left over from my daughter’s party last Saturday! More on that soon!

I have learned to keep a stash of macarons on hand in the freezer when I need a pick me up, or have company coming by. They keep so well and are an anytime fix and an easy dessert option for entertaining. I prefer mine with a mug of hot tea in the morning hours, or a brut (less sweet) sparkling wine after dinner.

Thanks for reading! Wishing you all a weekend just as sweet!

Birthday-gram

Last week I welcomed another birthday and although 1 year older, I feel grateful for the gifts and blessings that have come my way. There are simply too many to count and mention here, so instead I’ll just share with you some of the highlights of the celebration, that I enjoyed with my dear family and friends.

I used instagram to capture it all.

Birthday-gram by PLD

A birthday for me just wouldn’t be complete without macarons! I just love them…maybe too much! But since we don’t live close to any bakery that makes them, my hubby sent for some from Dana’s Bakery. Let me just say that I couldn’t have been more excited when they arrived at my doorstep! And the flavors like birthday cake, pumpkin pie, thin mint, s’mores, pecan pie and chocolate chip cookie dough, meant there was no way to go wrong.

A macaron is the perfect birthday treat for me! My hubby even wedged a single candle into one and him and my girls sang to me. Melted my heart.

I also got the gift of a new rose gold timepiece by Michael Kors, some of my favorite bath products from Philosophy, and a pair of sexy black heels by Louise Et Cie, because every girl should own a pair of heels that makes her feel just that!

I enjoyed some much needed pampering and got my nails painted in the trendy fall hue of oxblood, and then celebrated with sweet treats, champagne and my favorite girls at the cutest little gem of a bakery in my home town. I also got the most gorgeous bouquet of flowers as you can see above, from a girlfriend I have known for nearly 20 years.

Not seen here was the afternoon date I got to enjoy with my husband while my mom looked after the girls. The image of me in “all black everything” was from our date together which consisted of brunch at a local southern spot, featuring the most incredible fried okra and Caesars, followed by a stroll around downtown and then lastly a visit to Trader Joes. Ha!! The last of our date was more about how much we could get accomplished while the girls were with grandma, but sometimes it isn’t about what you do, but who you do it with.

Who else has a November birthday?? Scorpio season!

If we aren’t friends on Instagram yet, follow me here. I always follow back!

Cheers and thanks for reading! Check back soon.

End of summer-gram

My daughter heads back to preschool today, so our summer is officially over, but what an amazing 3 months we had.

Just one week ago I wasn’t quite sure I felt ready for fall, but after visiting some of my favorite shops and purchasing a few items for my wardrobe, I’ve pretty much decided I’m ready to welcome it with open arms. Not to mention the fact that we’ve already made two batches of vegan apple crisp from homegrown apples and I had my fantasy football draft for an all girl’s league this past week!

Yes, I got the push that I needed to transition into fall mode, which means I’ll have seasonal concepts and inspiration to share with you soon.

Until then, here’s a peek at how the last few weeks of our summer went down, captured via Instagram of course. 20130904-103459.jpg

There’s nothing I love more than quality time with my hubby and two girls, lunches with a view and mason jar summer cocktails. Local olive oil and vinegar tastings, fresh flowers from the public market, macaron heaven, day trips to Vancouver, a new favorite accessory from urban outfitters and lastly a little football bling to kick off the fantasy season.

The images of the orchids were a surprise to me from my husband for our 8th wedding anniversary. The phalaenopsis orchid is my favorite flower and the blooms I chose for our wedding.

As memorable of a summer it was, let’s just say I’m more than ready for Fall now!

How did you spend the last few weeks of summer? I’d love to hear from you all!

Thanks as always for reading!!
