Real Parties: Hello Kitty Lemonade

Happy Friday all! It’s been a nonstop few weeks for me but I’ve finally had a bit of down time, and the opportunity to edit photos from my daughter’s 5th birthday party. My sweet girl has had her heart set on a Hello Kitty party for the last 5-6 months, but to make it a little more summery we tied in the Lemonade theme for an sweet sunshiny twist.

Our party location this year was completely different from any of the parties I’ve done for her in the past, at a local water park, which the kids absolutely loved. It was quite an experience to get everything transferred and setup under such a short time-frame but it all came together beautifully and just in time!

I began with the invitations.

Then 1 month before the party, started gathering all of my supplies for the celebration. I’ve got a good amount of odds and ends on hand from previous parties that I’ve done, so it was nice to be able to  re-use! Such a great way to save money!

For most of my character parties, I choose to keep the details a bit more subtle. I usually start with a white backdrop because I love having a blank canvas to work with. I tie in my colors from there. We went with a pink and yellow scheme, with Hello Kitty hand printed designs throughout. I put an emphasis on hello kitty’s silhouette and bow and centered the prints around those 2 components. Everything from the invitations, to the bunting for the dessert table, lemonade stand and cupcake toppers and labels were all created and printed in photoshop using these details.

I’m kind of obsessed with oversized balloons these days as I love the look and feel they add to a parties, so I made sure to incorporate those in pink, yellow and white, along with a few Hello Kitty character balloons. We had plenty of mismatched mason jars that I filled with loose stem blooms in shades of yellow and white for a bit of a shabby feel. Many of the flowers I was able to use from my Mother-in-laws garden. Another great money saver!

The kids had their own table in the center of the room with color coordinating placemats and a favor bag filled with themed goodies.

We chose to keep the menu as simple as possible but still a bit gourmet. We had a build your own sandwich station with plenty of options to choose from and my mom made her homemade fried chicken. We served it all alongside fresh fruit, side salads, and fresh chips and crackers with dips and antipasto.

We had a designated location for homemade lemonade which I made by hand squeezing what I think ended up being nearly 40 lemons with homemade simply syrup and purified water. We had mix-ins for the kids – fresh fruit puree’s and for the adults–homemade lavender syrup, rosemary and mint, in addition to other assorted beverages.

For dessert:

We served homemade lemon sugar cookies with royal icing, shaped like lemons, hello kitty’s face and hello kitty’s bow. I’ll have the lemon cookie cutters available for purchase in the etsy shop within the next week!

The cookies were decorated with the assistance of my two lovely sisters! I also made homemade lemon bars using the recipe I found on Bakers Royale which turned out amazing! I highly recommend the recipe. I chose to make the crust dairy free and they were still so great…definitely worth trying!

Cupcakes were homemade with a strawberry lemonade buttercream frosting. Each cupcake was lined with a Paper Eskimo baking cup and then garnished with a pink paper straw and a quartered strawberry for a finishing touch! They turned out so pretty!

In addition to the desserts, we had fresh lemon jelly wedges, yellow and pink sixlets and lemon drops displayed for our guests to enjoy. The candy was displayed in vintage milk glass dishes, miniature wood crates from Michael’s and mason jars.

We finished the party with pin the bow on hello kitty and gift opening. All of the kids seemed to have a great time and after the party was over, my daughter came to me and my hubby and told us that it was the best day she’s ever had!

Ahh, I so love these moments, and the fact that she’ll have the memories to look back on for a lifetime. It is truly a blessing to have such special daughters. They are my main source of inspiration and the reason I do all that I do. Seeing them happy is what life is all about.

Five

In just over 2 weeks our oldest daughter will be will turning five years old. I know I say it often, but time has just flown! Even though it has, I am so so grateful to have spent every day of the last 5 years right by her side. There is honestly no place I would rather be! It’s simply amazing to watch her grow. All the ways she surprises us, and keeps us on our toes. And she is definitely a miniature version of myself. There’s seriously nothing more adorable than watching her follow behind me taking snapshots of toy treats and crafts that she’s made with her little Fisher Price camera. Ahh, my heart seriously melts.

In addition to loving to take photos, these days she also enjoys having her photo taken. This is a huge bonus for me because I truly enjoy photographing my girls as they grow. Plus I was in need of a few shots for her 5 year birthday and also for use on her party invitation, which I’m revealing below.

Just a few of my favorites to capture her in her element. Of course her dress matches the color scheme of her soon to be pink and yellow Hello Kitty Lemonade Party.

I found the cute little Hello Kitty summer dress at Target, and the handmade headband came from Yasmi & Crew‘s Etsy shop! Be sure to check her out for darling handcrafted accessories.

Hello Kitty Lemonade

Oh to be 5 years old! I remember that age growing up so well. When the days were complete with popsicles and bike rides, neighborhood friends and summer’s that felt like they lasted a year long. Do you remember those days? When we had not a care in the world? If only summer’s could last and feel the same now….I would seriously be in heaven!! But as much as I long for that slow down, time just keeps on ticking. Now I can hardly believe we’re only one month from my love’s 5th birthday! Let the party planning begin!

My sweet girl has had Hello Kitty party on her wish list since last year, but this won’t be just any Hello Kitty party. We’ll be adding in many summer vibes, in shades of lemony yellow for a Hello Kitty Lemonade theme. Fitting for the season, fresh and sunny with plenty of hello kitty accents and of course some homemade lemonade too!

Sounds like summer to me!

Here’s what’s inspiring me right now!

Watermelon Lemonade

My absolute favorite homemade bevy to make as the warmer months approach is fresh lemonade. I’ve made many variations in the past and my daughter’s 2nd birthday was the perfect time to test out a new flavor. This time I switched things up by adding fresh watermelon puree, for a sweet spring-time twist!

The watermelon not only colors the lemonade a beautiful shade of pink (how posh) but it also balances the tart lemony notes, which are smoothed out by the homemade simple syrup. Such a delight! If you have yet to try this kind of lemonade, I highly recommend that you do! It’s fairly simple to make and no store bought brand can compare! It was an instant favorite at our Ombre Minnie Mouse celebration a few weeks back, enjoyed by everyone that attended!

1 large Pitcher.

4 cups of watermelon, cubed puréed and strained

While sugar and water are boiling, cut lemons in half and juice them.

Pour lemon juice into a pitcher, using a strainer to the catch seeds.

Measure out 4 cups of cut watermelon and purée using a blender or magic bullet.

Pour puréed watermelon through a strainer to remove pulp and then into the pitcher of lemon juice.

Pour cooled simple syrup into lemon and watermelon mixture and stir.

Top the watermelon, lemon and sugar mixture already  with purified water, 2 cups at a time. Stir, and then taste before you add additional cups of water until the desired flavor is achieved!

I like to serve mine in fancy glasses with a few of my favorite garnishes!

Sparkling Lavender Lemonade

Making homemade lemonade is one of the many things I look forward to as the weather starts to warm. In fact, it has become quite a tradition for us during the summer and is one of our favorite beverages to serve at parties. It seriously is the greatest party beverage because it’s suitable for all ages and super versatile with endless flavor combos. Kids can enjoy it as is, and adults can add spirits if they so prefer.

One of the main sips for our guests at my daughter’s Spring in Paris 1st birthday last weekend was a lemonade infused with lavender simple syrup to accompany our french fare. I made the simple syrup a few days in advance and froze it into ice-cube trays to keep it fresh. A few hours before the party, I let the syrup thaw and mixed it into the lemonade until the flavor was just right. The technique worked out great and everyone seemed to enjoy the flavor combo! Refreshing, tangy and floral, with subtle notes and an aroma, yet not too overpowering.

Lavender Lemonade

After the party was over the lavender lemonade was gone, but luckily I had leftover simple syrup cubes in the freezer to spare, so I made individual servings for my hubby and I to enjoy. This time around I topped them with Perrier (sparkling water) for a fun little twist.

To make these, you’ll want to prep the syrup first.

Lavender Simple Syrup

Ingredients/Supplies

2 cups water

1 cup sugar.

1/4 cup dried lavender pods for culinary use. We found ours at the local Farmer’s Market.

Instructions

Pour ingredients into a metal pot and bring to boil.

Allow to boil for and then reduce heat to medium allowing to cook for 2-5 minutes.

Remove from heat.

Strain and chill.

(I made 2 batches of this and reused the strained lavender pods for the second batch..the flavor still came through.)

If you won’t be using the syrup right away, pour it into ice-cube trays to preserve and keep fresh. Because of the sugar content, the cubes will only semi freeze, but they can still be easily transfer from the ice-cube tray into a container or ziplock bag for easy storage.

Lavender Lemonade

Lavender Lemonade

This recipe is for 6 individual servings of lemonade, but can easily be transformed into a large batch for parties and celebrations see below for instructions.

Ingredients/Supplies

1 whole lemon freshly squeezed

6 cubes of lavender simply syrup

3 16 oz bottles Perrier or other sparkling water

Rosemary, Lemon wedges and Lavender springs for garnish (optional)

Paper straws

Lavender lemonade ingredients

Instructions

(double ingredients for if using full size glass)

Pour 1 tablespoon lemon juice into the bottom of each champagne glass.

Followed by 1-2 lavender simple syrup cubes (depending on how sweet you like it) I prefer just 1.

Lavender Lemonade ingredients

Top with sparkling water and allow simple syrup cubes to melt in the sparkling water.

Give it a light stir.

Garnish. Enjoy!!

Lavender Lemonade

For enough to serve 12 or more, you’ll need the the juice of 8 lemons and 12 cubes of frozen lavender simple syrup (or 1 cooled batch) and approximately 1/2 to 3/4 of a gallon (8 to 12 cups) purified water. Simply mix the ingredients to taste until the desired flavor is reached. If using the frozen lavender cubes, use room temperature water and the lavender syrup will melt quickly while also chilling the lemonade.

posh little tip – transform this lemonade into the perfect summer cocktail by adding champagne or your favorite spirits. A great beverage option for bridal showers, luncheons or family celebrations.

Check back in soon for more posh.
